8 Days Uganda Birding Safari

Day 1: Arrival and Hotel Transfer.
On arrival, you will be met and received by your birding guide from African Crane Safaris, who will brief you as he transfers you to your hotel for overnight. Depending on the time of your arrival, you may spend the afternoon at Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) formally Entebbe Zoo, home to rescued animals and over 170 species of birds. This includes 7 species of weavers, such as the rare Northern Masked Weaver and Orange Weaver, etc. Overnight

Day 2: Mabira Forest and Source Of The Nile
birding in mabira forestAfter breakfast you will be transferred East of Uganda towards Jinja, home of the mighty river Nile. About an hour drive from Kampala we will stop at Mabira Forest for a walk through the tropical rainforest in such of species like: Leaf love, Forest Robin, Buf spotted Woodpecker, Grey spotted Woodpecker, the Toro Greenbul, Yellow whiskered Greenbul,   White spotted Fluff tail, Red headed Blue Bill, Yellow spotted Barbet, Grey throated Barbet, Yellow rumped Tinker bird, Yellow throated Tinker bird, Blue breasted Kingfisher, African Pygmy, Shining Blue, Woodland Kingfishers, Red tailed Ant Thrush, Chin spot Batis, Banded Wattle Eye, Chestnut Wattle Eye, Brown capped, Yellow mantled, Black Billed, Weyn’s Weavers, Red headed Malimbe, Purple headed Starling, Violet backed Starling among other fascinating species resident in this forest, transferring later to Jinja for lunch and visit to the Source of the Nile, where we will look out for  many water birds like the African Fish Eagle, Open billed Stork, Long tailed Cormorant, Grey Heron, White Egret and Pied Kingfisher, among others, if time allows, visit the Bujali falls famous for its adventurous activities like White water rafting, Canoeing, the Nile high Bungy jumping, Jet boating, Kayaking among others, returning later to Kampala, relaxing at your hotel into the evening, dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Kampala – Murchison Falls National Park
After breakfast an early morning breakfast, depart for Murchison falls national that boosts with over 450 species of birds. Via Ziwa Rhino sanctuary proceedings for a lunch break in Masindi before arriving at the park for a late visit to the magnificent top of the falls where you will enjoy and marvel at the mighty Nile. The famous waterfall being forced into a seven meter crevice to thunder 45 meters below in a series of cascades. This spectacular scenery can be viewed from different points up at the baler's summit. Also birds like the African Pied Wagtail, Rock Pranticoles and a mixed flock of swifts can be seen here. Transferring later to check in your lodge, dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Murchison Falls National Park
After an early morning warm up tea/coffee, you will transfer to enjoy a game drive on the northern bank of the Nile in such of animals and birds like: Rothschild Giraffe, elephant, Jackson’s Hartebeest and waterbucks and a rich variety of savannah woodland birds: Spotted Morning Thrush, Common Drongo, Bruce’s Green Pigeon; the Grey Crowned Cranes, Saddle billed Stork, Silver bird, Chestnut Capped Weaver, Black billed Dove and Namaqua Dove, returning for have your lunch, after lunch you will be transferred to enjoy a three hours Nile cruise to the bottom of the falls, watch how hippos take a bath, crocodiles lying lazy at the shores and many colorful Bee-eaters flying. Other species you may come across include: the Goliath, Purple, Grey Green backed Herons, Common Squacco Heron, Giant, Malachite, African Pygmy and Pied Kingfishers. Dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Murchison Falls National Park – Fort Portal
birding along the way to Fort portalAfter an early morning breakfast, depart Murchison Falls Southwest via the Albertine Escarpment of the Western Rift Valley through Hoima, the capital of the Bunyonro Kingdom. Along the way, watch out for birds like the White Browed and Senegal Coucals, passing through verdant countryside, tea plantations and traditional homesteads. You will arrive in Fort Portal, the capital of the Tooro kingdom, in the late afternoon hours; relax into the evening dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Bigodi Swamp and Crater Lakes
After an early breakfast, transfer to Bigodi for this day’s activity (birding on Bigodi swamp). This Swamp Walk is an initiative of the local community here and takes about two hours. The swamp is known for its rich diversity of birds also referred as “Home of the Great Blue Turaco”, a beautiful coloured bird that you can’t miss, an excellent place to see some of the special birds endemic to this habitat, like the Marsh Tchagra, Papyrus Gonolek, Papyrus Canary and White Winged Warbler. After lunch we will pass the region of the Crater Lakes for some more birding. Enjoy the beauty of hundreds of small lakes and some stunning views, while you pass little African villages. You may also spot the White Spotted Fluff-tail, Blue Headed Coucals spectacular Yellow Billed Barbet and Scaly-throated Honey-guide. Dinner and overnight

Day 7: Fort Portal - Kampala
After your breakfast, transfer back to Kampala while birding along your way, arriving to have your lunch in Kampala, relax into the evening or go shopping, overnight at your hotel.

Day 8:   City Trail / Airport Transfer
After an early breakfast transfer for the City Trails, situated about 10 km from Entebbe. Here you will enjoy 4 hours of birding on the best trails around Kampala, with over 170 species of birds! Look out for the, Brown Twin Spots, Moustached Warbler, Fain tailed Widow bird, White headed Barbets, Blue Monarch, Striped Kingfisher, Black Bishop, Black headed Gonolek, Klass’, Diederik’s Cuckoo and many more. Lunch at the park, relax while birding and later in the afternoon return to your hotel, freshen up before transferring to the airport to catch your flight back home (this day’s activity will depend on your departure time.)
